Previous Chosen Song and Information about the Artist

It took much consideration when deciding on the most suitable song and artist to use for my music video however I have chosen "Who you are" by Jessie J. The ideology i want to use for my music video is heartbreak and love as this concept is familiar to audiences of all genres therefore  some alternate genre music lovers may be more open minded about listening to pop as it is personal to them. By promoting the feelings of the majority of the audience, depending on the success should result in high popularity ratings.

Jessy J is current artist who has reached national success with her debut singles including "domino", "do it like a dude" and "price tag". She is recognised for her unconventional musical and performance style that mixes soul vocals combining different genres of music including RnB with pop and hip-hop beats. I did not choose this artist because of her popularity and my personal interest, but the emotional language she uses in her lyrics which demonstrates a reality for the viewers.

Love still dominates pop song lyrics although now presented through different beats and themes. From researching different sites on average around 80% of songs demonstrate some aspect of love. For example (focusing on the pop genre) the current song "Heatwave", the artist Wiley sings of the physical attraction between 2 people and typically  is conveyed in an upbeat tone so it follows the appropriate conventions. "Feel the love" by Rudimental also gained a spot on the top 10 and again disguises the meaningful lyrics of the song by using a fast paced rhythm to convey that party  mood to the audience. Clearly there are many examples of artists following this theme with their songs as fundamentally it is very popular with the audience and that is their main intended outcome.

Jessie J - Who you Are

It is important for me to familiarise myself with the lyrics of this song as it will enable me to choose appropriate shots which create connotations for the audience and visually show how the artist is feeling at that point in the song. For example the most ovbious line I could use "I stare at my reflection in the mirror" obviously the shot has to be of the model looking into the mirror so the video makes sense and relates to the words of the song.

Song Lyrics

Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,I stare at my reflection in the mirror:
"Why am I doing this to myself?"
Losing my mind on a tiny error,
I nearly left the real me on the shelf.
No, no, no, no, no...

Don't lose who you are in the blur of the stars!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay.
Sometimes it's hard to follow your heart.
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are!

Brushing my hair, do I look perfect?
I forgot what to do to fit the mold, yeah!
The more I try the less it's working, yeah
'Cause everything inside me screams
No, no, no, no, no...

Don't lose who you are in the blur of the stars!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay.
Sometimes it's hard to follow your heart.
But tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
There's nothing wrong with who you are!

Yes, no's, egos, fake shows, like WHOA!
Just go, and leave me alone!
Real talk, real life, good love, goodnight,
With a smile, that's my home!
That's my home, no...

No, no, no, no, no...
Don't lose who you are in the blur of the stars!

It's okay not to be okay...
Sometimes it's hard to follow your heart.
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are!
Yeah yeah yeah

Brief

For my A2 media studies coursework I have chosen to create a promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video with two of the following three options:
  • A website homepage for the band.
  • A cover for its release as part of digipak (CD/DVD package).
  • A magazine advertisement for the digipack (CD/DVD package).
